Celebrating the tenth anniversary of its admission to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Montenegrin Olympic Committee established a special recognition in 2017 called the "Golden Star of Montenegrin Sport" for their overall contribution, work, and promotion of Olympism and its values. This year's "Golden Star of Montenegrin Sport" was awarded to the Golden Lionesses, the generation of the Montenegrin women's handball team that won Olympic silver and European gold in 2012.
