Montenegrin Olympic Committee Supports Competition and Training Programme of the Berišaj Sisters

The Montenegrin Olympic Committee (NOC) has signed agreements on the implementation of the competition and training programme with Montenegro’s taekwondo national team athletes, sisters Anđela and Andrea Berišaj, continuing institutional support for their sporting development and Olympic ambitions.

The President of the Taekwondo Federation of Montenegro, Predrag Drecun, emphasised that “taekwondo is one of the Olympic sports in which Montenegro has recorded steady progress in recent years, and the success of the Berišaj sisters further confirms the potential of this discipline on the international stage.”

The Berišaj sisters have for years been considered among the most promising athletes in Montenegrin taekwondo, while their results on the international scene confirm consistent quality and real potential for top achievements on the path towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

“The success of Montenegrin athletes is not only a reason for celebration, but also an obligation for the state and the system to provide them with stability, continuity and the best possible conditions for development and growth. Sport is not built on the emotion of a single moment, but on responsibility towards future generations. The Berišaj sisters are exactly such an example: for years they have been working, progressing and winning medals for Montenegro. Our task is to support them at every step and stand by them on the path which I am certain will be marked by success all the way to achieving the Olympic qualification standard, and we hope also medals,” said Dušan Simonović, President of the Montenegrin Olympic Committee.

Anđela Berišaj has achieved significant results in junior categories, among which the title of Junior World Vice-Champion in taekwondo in the −68 kg category particularly stands out, as well as two bronze medals at the European Under-21 Championships. Based on the exceptional results achieved in 2022, she was named one of the most successful young athletes of Montenegro, together with boxer Bojana Gojković.

Andrea Berišaj has recently confirmed her status as one of the most promising competitors of her generation. During 2025 she achieved notable results and won significant medals at international competitions: a bronze medal at the European Championships in Olympic categories in Aigle, Switzerland (−67 kg); a bronze medal at the World U21 Championships in Kenya (−67 kg); and a bronze medal at the European U21 Championships in Pristina, Kosovo. Based on these results, achieved in competition with 15 nominated candidates, the Executive Board of the Montenegrin Olympic Committee named Andrea Berišaj the Best Athlete of Montenegro for 2025, awarding her the country’s highest national sporting recognition.

Vlado Stanišić, coach of the Montenegrin national team athletes, noted that “behind Anđela and Andrea are three important G2 tournaments at which valuable points for the world ranking list were secured. In May the European Senior Championships in Germany follow, while Andrea has qualified for the senior Grand Prix in Rome in June. The rest of the summer will be dedicated to preparations for the Mediterranean Games, and our athletes will also compete at the World Championships in Olympic categories to be held in the Philippines. In the period ahead for Anđela and Andrea, and between major tournaments, at least ten G-series tournaments await, along with battles for additional ranking points and qualification for the Grand Prix Final in Kazakhstan.”

About the NOC Scholarship Programme

The programme supporting Montenegrin athletes is a regular activity of the Montenegrin Olympic Committee and forms part of a broader support programme for young athletes on the Olympic pathway.

The aim of the programme is to help talented athletes prepare for competitions and cover part of the costs related to training and participation in international events, while providing additional motivation and stability during a crucial phase of their sporting development.

The Montenegrin Olympic Committee remains committed to the principle that athletes are at the centre of all development policies, with the belief that investing in young athletes represents the foundation of Montenegro’s future sporting success on the international stage.
