Montenegrin Olympic Committee Marks the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
The Montenegrin Olympic Committee (NOC) is once again marking the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (6 April), joining global efforts to promote the values of peace, solidarity and mutual understanding through sport.
Established by the United Nations, this day highlights the universal power of sport to bring people together, overcome differences and contribute to building a more inclusive and just society.
For the NOC, which is marking this day for the thirteenth time, this date holds particular significance as a reflection of its long-term commitment to sport as a space for values that shape society.
Through its programmes, initiatives and daily work with athletes, federations and the wider community, the NOC continuously reaffirms that sport is not only about results and competition, but also a space where character, responsibility and mutual respect are developed.
This year, the NOC has once again joined the global Peace and Sport initiative through the White Card campaign, symbolising a shared commitment to peace through sport.
“For us at the Montenegrin Olympic Committee, 6 April is not just a date in the international calendar. It is a reminder of the essence of what sport is and what it should be. Sport teaches us what is often forgotten today: that respect is the foundation of every relationship, that responsibility does not depend on results, and that the true value of victory lies in the way it is achieved.
In a world where differences often lead to division, sport reminds us that those very differences create space for understanding and remains one of the few universal languages we all share. It is our responsibility to use that language in the right way, to safeguard the values of sport and to build an environment in which every individual feels safe, respected and motivated, regardless of any personal characteristic.
For us, this day is therefore not only symbolic, nor is it a message directed at others. It is a reaffirmation of our commitment to developing sport in Montenegro as a space of values that go beyond the field of play and remain present in society,” said Dušan Simonović, President of the Montenegrin Olympic Committee.
The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was established in 2013 (by UN General Assembly Resolution 67/296). The date of 6 April was chosen as it marks the opening of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.
