Bojana Gojković won a bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto.
The Montenegrin boxer competed in the semi-final of the 57kg category, where she was defeated by Italy’s Irma Testa, finishing the competition with a bronze medal. “I boxed against a home competitor, and I was somewhat aware that this would influence the decisions and her victory. But I am satisfied with the bout, and so are my coaches. This was just a stop along the way towards what awaits me in 20 days, which is the European Championships,” Gojković said.
Marković seventh in the trap final — Following excellent performances in qualification, Jovica Marković secured a place in the trap final and finished seventh in a field that included Olympic and world champions.
“I hit 22 out of 25 targets in the first series and knew that I had to step it up if I wanted to reach the final. In the second, I hit all 25 and reached the final with the same number of hits as three other competitors. A shoot-off for positions followed, where I secured sixth place among the eight finalists. New rules have been introduced for the main final this year – after 10 targets, the seventh- and eighth-placed competitors are eliminated. I had some bad luck at the start, missing three out of five targets. Later, I hit all five, but it was too late for me to continue. All in all, I am satisfied. Reaching the final is a major achievement in competition like this,” Marković said.
Nikčević and Jovanović stopped in the mixed doubles — Tea Nikčević and Petar Jovanović were eliminated in their opening match of the mixed doubles tennis tournament by the Greek pair Matoula/Hilas. After losing the first set in a tie-break, 6:7, the Montenegrin players responded by winning the second set 6:3, while the Greek pair prevailed 10:2 in the deciding super tie-break.
“It was a difficult match. We went out in the third set, although we could have started the first one better. Later, we found our rhythm, but it turned out that a tie-break is always unpredictable,” Nikčević said.
Jovanović said that the Montenegrin pair needed more time to practise together. “It was a good match and we fought until the end. The Greeks started the super tie-break better and won it comfortably. I am satisfied with our play; I think we lacked more training together. But the level of tennis was good,” Jovanović said.
Jukić and Popović make their Mediterranean Games debuts — Ksenija Jukić and Kristina Popović did not progress from qualification in the women’s 10m air rifle event. Jukić finished 20th with 612 points, while Popović was 24th with a score of 604.8. For both Montenegrin athletes, this was their debut appearance at the Mediterranean Games.
“It is an honour to have represented my country at the Mediterranean Games. I am not satisfied with my performance. I started well, but then I made a major mistake that took me out of the competition and I was unable to recover. This was a great experience for us,” Popović said.
Jukić also highlighted the importance of the experience gained at a major multisport competition. “It is an honour to have competed at the Mediterranean Games and represented my country at such a major competition. The competition was exceptional. I am really not satisfied with my performance, but I am taking some important lessons home with me,” Jukić said.
