Karate athlete Balša Vojinović won a bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Montenegro’s fourth medal of the Games.
Competing in the under-60kg category, Vojinović defeated Egypt’s Ziad Ahmed Ali 3:0 in his opening bout, before beating Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Seldin Vej 8:2. He was defeated by Türkiye’s Burak Ozdemir in the semi-final, before beating Algeria’s Naim Ruichi 2:1 in the bronze medal bout. “I was aiming for the gold medal, but luck was not on my side in the semi-final. I am moving forward, with new challenges and achievements ahead of me, and the Mediterranean Games and this medal mean a lot to me. I hope to bring Montenegro more medals in the future,” Vojinović said.
Nenad Dulović was stopped in the bronze medal bout, where he was defeated 4:0 by Morocco’s Said Oubaj. In his opening bout in the under-67kg category, he defeated Yassine Khlifi 2:0 before losing to Croatia’s Boren Berak, whose progress took him into the repechage. Dulović then defeated Türkiye’s Omer Abdurahim 5:1 to secure a place in the bronze medal bout.
Helena Backović was defeated 3:1 by Silje Abdesselem, while Nađa Boričić lost 4:3 to another French competitor, Monica Arzumiano. Jovana Stojanović was defeated 6:1 by Talia Sombe in the quarter-final of the under-68kg category. Lazar Jovović was stopped in his opening bout by Spain’s Juan Clopes, 5:2.
“Sharks” to face Spain for a place in the final — The Montenegro men’s water polo team will face Spain tomorrow in the semi-final of the Mediterranean Games. Spain lost its final Group B match to Italy 14:13.
Montenegro finished top of Group A with three victories, securing its final group-stage win against Slovenia, 23:5.
“The difference in quality was significant. We worked on certain things we had discussed in the dressing room and got something out of the match that we needed for the semi-final. I expect a disciplined and aggressive Spain, a team at the top of world water polo and an example to other teams, including us. Spain enters every competition aiming for the gold medal,” Vladan Spaić said.
Dukić third ahead of final race — Milivoj Dukić has a chance to win a medal and will enter tomorrow’s final race in third place in the overall standings. The Montenegrin sailor finished tenth and 11th in the ninth and tenth races respectively.
Ilija Marković crossed the finish line in 13th and 14th place and currently sits 19th overall.
Bogavac tenth in javelin — Marija Bogavac completed Montenegro’s final appearance on the 11th competition day in the javelin throw. The Montenegrin athlete finished tenth.
She recorded her best result in the first round with a throw of 52.03 metres, followed by 49.64 and 48.68 metres in the next two rounds.
