Montenegro Water Polo Team to Face Greece in Opening Match: The Goal Is a Medal

The Montenegro men’s water polo team will play its opening match at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto tomorrow at 17:30, when it faces Greece.

Montenegro is in a group with Greece, Serbia and Slovenia, while Group B consists of Spain, Italy, France, Türkiye and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The first stage of the tournament will be played in a round-robin format, followed by the semi-finals.

The Montenegro water polo team, known as the “Sharks”, is the country’s only representative in a team sport at this year’s Mediterranean Games Taranto 2026. Water polo is one of Montenegro’s most successful sports, and Taranto provides another opportunity for the Sharks to demonstrate their quality on the international stage.

“We started preparations at the beginning of June. Today is 27 August, and the final tournament of this long summer with the national team is ahead of us. Our first match is against Greece and, like us, all the teams have arrived with mixed squads. But that is not important. We are aiming for a medal and the best possible result,” Vasilije Radović said.

The Montenegrin water polo player said that the team has completed an extensive period of preparation and training, with each player making individual progress.

“We have improved, which is important for the future. Our journey has taken us from America and Australia to Italy, and we cannot wait for the tournament to begin. I hope it ends in the best possible way for us,” Radović said.
